Visual language is more than a means of communication. It is a way of observing, remembering, classifying, and understanding the world. Every project begins with a simple question: How do humans understand the world through visual forms? Brand identities, plants, maps, archives, diagrams, and graphic structures are approached as interconnected visual systems. Although these subjects appear unrelated, they are connected through a shared interest in how visual languages shape perception, memory, and meaning. Through design, research, education, and artistic practice, visual languages are collected, reinterpreted, and reconstructed, expanding into new forms of visual thinking.
시각언어는 단순한 커뮤니케이션의 수단이 아니라, 세상을 관찰하고 기억하며 분류하고 이해하는 방식이다. 모든 프로젝트는 하나의 질문에서 시작된다. 인간은 시각적 형태를 통해 어떻게 세상을 이해하는가? 브랜드 아이덴티티, 식물, 지도, 아카이브, 도감, 다이어그램과 같은 서로 다른 대상들은 모두 인간이 세계를 이해하기 위해 만들어온 시각언어이다. 서로 다른 분야처럼 보이지만, 이들은 시각언어가 지각과 기억, 의미를 형성하는 방식이라는 공통된 질문 안에서 연결된다. 디자인, 연구, 교육, 전시를 통해 이러한 시각언어를 수집하고, 재해석하며, 새로운 시각적 사고와 조형 언어로 확장하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.
Design, research, education, and exhibition are treated not as separate disciplines but as interconnected ways of thinking. Every project begins with observation. Visual fragments are collected, documented, classified, and reconstructed to develop visual systems that evolve across different media and contexts. Research informs artistic practice. Artistic practice reshapes design. Teaching continuously generates new questions. Rather than seeking fixed conclusions, the practice remains an ongoing process of discovering relationships between images, ideas, and visual languages.
디자인, 연구, 교육, 전시는 서로 분리된 영역이 아니라 하나의 실천 방식이자 연결된 사고의 과정으로 바라본다. 모든 프로젝트는 관찰에서 시작된다. 관찰한 이미지를 수집하고, 기록하고, 분류하고, 재구성하는 과정을 통해 새로운 시각 시스템을 만들며, 이러한 과정은 다양한 매체와 형식으로 확장된다. 연구는 작업으로 이어지고, 작업은 다시 디자인으로 확장되며, 교육은 또 다른 질문을 만들어낸다. 하나의 정답을 제시하기보다 이미지와 개념, 그리고 시각언어 사이의 새로운 관계를 발견하고 구축하는 과정을 지속한다.
Seona Lim is a designer, researcher, educator, and artist based in Seoul. She received her BFA, MFA, and PhD in Visual Communication Design from Seoul National University. Through a broad range of design projects, academic research, university teaching, and independent artistic practice, she has continuously explored visual language as a way of understanding, organizing, and communicating the world. Her work investigates the relationships between identity, graphic systems, plants, archives, and visual culture. These explorations extend across exhibitions, publications, research, education, and experimental media, where visual language is developed through both practice and inquiry. She is currently developing Companion Flora, an ongoing artistic project exploring plants as temporal and visual structures, while building The Atlas of Visual Language, a long-term research platform connecting design, nature, memory, and visual thinking.
임선아는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 디자이너, 연구자, 교육자이자 작가이다. 서울대학교에서 시각디자인을 전공하고 학사, 석사, 박사 학위를 취득하였다. 다양한 디자인 프로젝트와 연구, 대학 교육, 그리고 독립적인 조형 예술 활동을 통해 시각언어를 인간이 세계를 이해하고 소통하는 방식으로 탐구해 왔다. 아이덴티티 디자인, 그래픽 시스템, 식물, 아카이브, 시각문화에 관한 연구를 기반으로 전시, 출판, 교육, 연구, 실험적 매체를 넘나들며 시각언어를 다양한 방식으로 확장하고 발표하고 있다. 현재는 식물을 시간과 조형 언어의 관점에서 탐구하는 Companion Flora 프로젝트를 진행하는 한편, 디자인과 자연, 기억, 시각적 사고를 연결하는 장기 연구 플랫폼 The Atlas of Visual Language를 구축하고 있다.
